Space

what exists beyond

Pocket with a blue and white image of a planetary magnetic field. An orange notebook and a pen are sticking out of the pocket

Inner Core / Outer Space is a solo piece that was created for, and accepted into, the juried Studio Art Quilts Associates (SAQA) international exhibition Fierce Planets. The show premiered at the Louisiana State University Museum of Art in Baton Rouge in April 2024 and will travel until 2026.

Taking the form of a lab coat, complete with pen and notepad, Inner Core / Outer Space personifies the physicists who are expanding our knowledge of planets and space. The front presents two interpretive planetary science diagrams: one outlines the layers a planet may contain, while the second shows a simplified planetary magnetic field. The buttons are hand-painted to represent Mercury, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Neptune. On the back is an artistic interpretation of outer space and its myriad bodies, with hand stitching suggesting inner layers or planetary forces.
